Oxygen Concentrators
Doctors typically prescribe oxygen therapy for people who have a more serious medical condition such as lung disease, cancer, or heart problems, that causes an insufficient amount of oxygen to circulate in their blood. Many people use bottled oxygen for their therapy. Others use an oxygen concentrator, a medical device that produces nearly pure oxygen from the air around us.
21% of the air around us is oxygen; nearly all of the rest is nitrogen. Oxygen concentrators remove most of the nitrogen from the air. 87% to 95% of what's left is oxygen. That nearly pure oxygen is delivered through a patient's nose via a tube or mask at a rate generally measured in LPM (liters per minute). Some people need oxygen therapy only a few hours each day; others need it only while sleeping; and others need it constantly.
There are two types of oxygen concentrators (sometimes called oxygen generators), portable and non-portable in-home. Portable oxygen concentrators cost more, but are truly portable and help a patient enjoy a much better quality of life. Home concentrators can be less expensive, but they are cumbersome and difficult to transport.
Many health insurance companies cover both equipment and supplies for in-home oxygen therapy IF it is prescribed by a doctor. Medicare also covers in-home oxygen therapy for people who qualify. Click on Medicare's guidelines for oxygen qualification for more information.
Here are a variety of in-home and portable oxygen concentrators, including the Inogen One portable oxygen concentrator, and the SeQual Eclipse 2 portable oxygen generator. Free shipping is included for each concentrator.
