Lightweight manual wheel chairs have two large wheels, two small wheels, and generally weigh between 29 to 34 pounds. Because they have the customary large wheels at the rear, they can be self-propelled by the user or pushed by a second person. Standard features usually include foldable frames, desk or full length armrests and removable swingaway footrests.

Factors to consider when purchasing a lightweight wheel chair:

Armrests. Desk length armrests are shorter than full length and allow the user to sit closer to a table or desk. Full length armrests provide more complete support for the user's arms.
Footrests or Leg Rests. Footrests provide leg support while seated; they cannot be raised or lowered. Optional leg rests allow users to adjust the elevation of each leg, and lock them into the desired position. A leg rest also has a calf pad that supports a user's leg. Footrests and leg rests are available in optional swingaway versions that allow users unobstructed access to and from the wheel chair seat.
